Santa Hat-Wearing Bus Driver Allowed to Keep Job
Semitough thought the Seattle airport Christmas tree debacle was inane, but this goes beyond the pale of politically correct stupidity surrounding Christmas.
A Long Island (pronounced Lawn GUY-lund) school bus driver was told he would be fired if he did not quit wearing a Santa hat while on the job. The driver, who has a long white beard, has been wearing the hat at Christmas ever since he started driving a school bus five years ago.
Seems this year a mother (note: singular. ONE parent.) complained to the company which privately operates school transportation services for the schools saying that her son doesn’t believe in Santa Claus and was bothered by the hat.
So one wonders if a guy in a Santa hat came up to the kid and said “Hey kid. Here’s an iPod. Merry Christmas.” would the kid still be offended? Would he decline the gift and complain to his mother? If said guy in Santa hat came up to bothered-by-Santa-hat’s mom and said “Hey mom. Here’s a thousand bucks. Merry Christmas.” Would she be so principled as to decline based on non-belief in gift giving elves? Semitough thinks not.
Update: In a comment on this post a reader asks this question:
So, what if I don’t believe in cops? Can I file a lawsuit to get all cops to stop wearing cop hats?
Semitough felt that this question deserved a full detailed response in this forum. Thusly introduced, here is Semitough’s thoughtful and complete answer to your question:
Uh……yeah.
