Bratislava

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a favorite place you have visited? Where is it?

This will likely date me but anyone who read the “About” section already knows I am ancient. But there was an SNL skit with Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd where they played two, what was at the time, Czech brothers (Now Slovakian).

The phrase “run from the tanks in Bratislava” is a line from the famous “Two Wild and Crazy Guys” Saturday Night Live (SNL) sketches featuring Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin.

The characters, Georg and Yortuk Festrunk, were two brothers who emigrated from Czechoslovakia (now two separate countries, Czechia and Slovakia) to the United States. They often mentioned having to flee their home country during the Soviet occupation to explain their “wild and crazy” pursuit of American women.

So that is the only thing I knew about Bratislava. Until last May. My Anam Cara and I took a cruise down the Danube river, starting in Budapest (probably number 2 or 3 on my list) and had a stop in Bratislava.

What an amazing little town. We took a walking tour and there was something very low key about the town. I found a dive bar (It’s a talent I have) in Hviezdoslav Square and we hung out and had a few local brews before we headed back to the boat.

We visited a lot of towns and cities along the way, but Bratislava was my chill favorite.
